Starting Points |
Between these three very talented musicians, they have four Juno Awards and ten nominations. Tri-Continental is Bill Bourne, Madagascar Slim and Lester Quitzau. Bill Bourne has been a integral part of the Canadian folk scene for many years working with such artists as the Tannahill Weavers, Alan McLeod, fiddler Shannon Johnson, blues artist Hans Stamer and guitarist Andreas Schuld. Randriamananjara Radofa Besata Jean Longin, a.k.a. Madagascar Slim, Heard Jimi Hendrix on the radio as a young man learning the guitar in Antananarivo, Madagascar. From that day forward he has been synthesizing the traditional music of Madagascar with the blues and in the recent years has been studying the valiha, the bamboo zither of the Malgache. Lester Quitzau began playing the blues in the bars of Edmonton and points beyond that few other artists in the genre could imagine. Tri-Continental grew out of a meeting backstage at Toronto's Bamboo Club. Slim heard Bill playing his guitar backstage and then sat down as they began showing each other a few things and playing together. Three years later, Lester flew into Toronto from Edmonton, Bill parked his '68 Lincoln Continental for a few days and Slim joined them in the studio.
