Wimme performs the traditional form of Sami (formerly known as Laplander) singing known as yoik - a freely improvised vocalization, usually about a person, place or an animal It's music that has a strong, guttural similarities to Native American singing. Wimme Saari creates the yoik, and only then do Tapani Rinne and Jari Kokkonen from a Finnish Techno jazz band and Matti Wallenius on acoustic string instruments join in, give shape and depth to the complete, unedited yoiks. There were a few performers who really stood out as something one just had to experience. Wimme was an offering high on my "must see" list.
